Sometimes, when I’m traveling, I get hit by certain particular aspects of new cities that I don’t know and probably wouldn’t notice if I lived there.
During the days spent in New York in 2018, while exploring the streets of Manhattan, I started to notice this recurring urban pattern of Standpipes, which can be found everywhere along the city sidewalks.
These devices are necessary to maintain the city’s fire safety system efficiently, they are color-coded, and to a tourist’s eyes, they are simply curious objects that make the city more interesting.
However, I found them to be points of interest that inspired active research to capture as many as possible, integrating them into New York’s urban landscape with its flaws, imperfections, and the people who inhabit its streets.
